Jillian ripped the note from the door. She couldn't help it. Her self-control slipped and she burst out crying right there. Half-dressed women stared at her reprovingly. But she didn't care. She felt ashamed and used—but mostly, she felt angry at herself for letting any of it happen.

It took her a full two minutes to get herself under control. Her whole body had gone limp and she couldn't seem to move. Finally, when her fingers were working again, she opened the locker and grabbed her purse. She had no idea where her water bottle or towel had ended up. Casualties. Leave them. She had to get out of there.

As she made her way through the lobby of the gym out to the street, Jillian was buried in her phone looking up the number of a cab company. So she was startled when the receptionist called out her name.

"Ms. Campbell?"

Jillian stopped and turned, feeling more than a little self-conscious about her red-rimmed eyes.

"There's a note for you here."

The receptionist was holding a folded paper out. Jillian walked back quickly and took it.

"Thanks," she muttered. She shoved it into her purse without looking at it, then continued out of the lobby and onto the street. She crossed the street and walked down a couple of blocks as she dialed the number of the cab company and ordered a ride. There was no way she was waiting right in front of the gym.

As she waited, she was sorely tempted to open the note. She suspected who it was from. But she wasn't going to risk bursting into tears again right there on the street.

A few minutes later, the cab pulled up and Jillian got in. She gave the driver her address, and then sat back and braced herself. She opened the note with trembling fingers.
